Welcome to the City of Mediapolis Iowa. The purpose of this
website is to provide useful public information and interesting historical facts
about Mediapolis.
Mediapolis has completed a new $2,500,000
aquatic facility that opened July 15, 2008. This state-of-the-art facility will
feature a 6600 sq. ft. swimming area with a
168 foot waterslide, a catamaran slide for
the younger children and a zero depth
entrance into the pool. The Olympic-size
deep area will feature five lanes for
competitive and lap swimming.
Unlike the old
pool, there will be a large area around the
perimeter of the pool for natural grass.
Five 20 foot umbrellas and numerous picnic
tables will be in place around the pool. The
concessions area has been expanded to allow
for a more complete menu. Pool hours will be
from noon to 8:00 PM on Monday-Saturday and
1-7 PM on Sundays. A complete area
lighting system and public address system
will be in place.
The bathhouse, built in 1932, has been moved
to the new facility. This unique building
will serve as a reminder of the successful
pools in the past. This bathhouse served the
original pool from 1932 to 1941. The pool
and bathhouse were completely renovated in
1969 and served through 2007.
In the
past, at the old 3700 sq. ft. facility,
there was a very active Red Cross swimming
lesson program with over 300 students
participating in group lessons and private
lessons each season. This will be continued
at the new facility. For this season there
will be nine Water Safety Instructors to
accommodate everyone desiring lessons. It is
estimated that over 50% of the students in
our community have taken swimming
instruction.
Our aerobics/individual work-out sessions
have proved to be very popular; over 60
individuals take part in this program. This
may be expanded with more possibilities at
the new pool; swimming and diving teams are
a distinct possibility in the future.
Fund-raising is
in the hands of Partners for Progress, a
group of interested Mediapolis citizens;
this group has an ambitious goal of building
our pool from donations with the city
contributing $500,000. Following this will
be the construction of a day-care center
with an active instructional program,
followed by the purchase of land adjacent to
the city for expansion; this is all a part
of the three-point plan.
These are
exciting times for the community. The 1800
people of Mediapolis, as well as the
surrounding area, have been very supportive
of all our community endeavors. The city and
its citizens have recently completed a
beautiful auditorium at the school, city
hall is a recently built facility, all
streets are paved, most churches have been
remodeled, businesses have built new
facilities, the school has recent additions
and the sports complexes continue to be
updated.
Please see
the pool link for information about
policies, fees and photos of the
construction project.
