CITY SERVICES AND INFORMATION
POOL
The Mediapolis Swimming Pool is open from Memorial Day until school begins in
the fall. Daily hours are noon to 8:00 PM, Monday -Saturday, 1:00 - 7:00 PM on
Sunday. Private parties last 1 1/2 hours beginning 15 minutes after closing.
Cost is $60 for up to 40 people and raises $1.50 per person over 40 people. If
water slide is included, the cost is $30 per hour over the normal party charge.
Parties scheduled on Tues., Fri., Sat., and Sun. Other evenings are available by
special request. Lessons are offered in two week, forty minute, Monday-Friday sessions
at a cost per session of $25 for in- city and $30 for out of city. Private
lessons are $30 for five 30-minute classes. Admission prices- No charge to age
one (those escorting pay regular prices) Pre-school $2 (those escorting pay
regular prices, K-12 students through adults $3, Senior citizens $1, Street
clothes $1, Aerobics $3 per session or card for 10 classes for $25. Family passes- $60.00, Individual
passes are -$40.00. The pool is located at 845 N. Northfield Street. William
Luckenbill is the pool manager.
LIBRARY
The Mediapolis Public Library is open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday and Thursday and 10:00
AM – 2:00 PM on Saturday. The library offers a wide range of materials from
books and magazines, VCR and audiotapes, CD’s and DVD’s to Internet access. Both
summer and winter reading programs are offered for children along with story
hour and there are book discussion groups for adults. The library is located at
128 North Orchard Street. Kim Earnest is the library director, Katherine Harman
and Andrea Rauhaus are library clerks.
CITY COUNCIL
Council meetings are held on the first and third Thursdays of each month at City
Hall at 6:30 PM. Minutes, notices, ordinances and other information regarding
city policies and business can be found in this website and are published in the Mediapolis News. Those now
serving are Larry Flaherty, Mayor, Bob Gerling, Tara Abel, Chuck Massner Tim
Licko and John Vose Councilmen. Julie Tribbey is the city clerk,
Carolyn Stoller is the deputy clerk, Greg Kuenzler is the public works foreman, and
Russ Nelson, Travis Luttenegger, Brad Hand and Monte Hawley complete the city staff.
REFUSE COLLECTION
Regular residential refuse collection days are Monday and Friday and collection
is done by the city. There is a fifty-pound limit for containers. For major
clean ups, call city hall or the city shop to request a truck or dumpster. The
charge for the service will appear on your water bill. Dumpster fees are $10 for
a small and $20 for a large size. Truck fees are $20 for a load of brush only
and $30 for any mixed loads. The fee is charged each time the dumpster or truck
is emptied. Please use common sense when loading either. Overloading may result
in the truck or dumpster not being picked up and/or an additional charge.
Furniture, carpet cut into reasonable lengths, other large items etc. is picked up each Wednesday.
The last Tuesday of the month is when appliances, air conditioners, batteries,
or any other large metal items are picked up. Please call city hall if you need
either of these services. Latex paint cans can be collected with regular refuse as
long as the lids are removed and the paint has been solidified with sand or
kitty litter. No yard waste can be picked up with regular refuse. There are
dumpsters marked “YARD WASTE ONLY” between the two northernmost Quonset huts
across from the elementary school. If a
holiday falls on a Sunday or Monday, refuse collection will be on Tuesday. If a
holiday falls on Friday or Saturday, there will be no collection until Monday.
Burning refuse is never allowed.
RECYCLING
Curbside recycling is available every other Friday. Annual calendars indicating
collection dates are available at city hall. Containers are provided on request
at no charge. There is also a large, compartmentalized recycling bin located at
the west end of the lot behind Fast Break on the highway that may be used at any
time. When bins become full please call either the Recycling Center at
1-800-216-8126 or City Hall to ask that container be emptied. Please recycle as
much as possible. Our average monthly cost for landfill fees is $4800.
FIRE DEPARTMENT, AMBULANCE SERVICE
Mediapolis has a volunteer fire department. Bob Gerling is the Fire Chief. The
ambulance service is also made up of volunteers. New faces in either
organization are always welcome.
WATER AND SEWER
Water and sewer service is provided by the city. Water meters are read each
month, typically in the middle of the month. The bills for water, sewer and
refuse are mailed near the end of the month and are due in full by the 20th of
the month following. Payment for these services can be automatically deducted
from your checking or savings account. Please stop by or call city hall to get
the necessary paperwork.
TELEPHONE AND CABLE TV
MCT is a locally owned and operated company that
provides telephone, cable TV and Internet access.
GAS AND ELECTRIC
The city of Mediapolis has a franchise agreement with Alliant to provide gas and
electric services to the citizens.
LAW ENFORCEMENT
Mediapolis has a contract with the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Department to
provide service and coverage for the city. Mediapolis is also a neighborhood
watch community.
